Types of Braces
Braces can correct a wide variety of orthodontic issues, including gapped or crowded teeth. The pressure created by this common oral appliance will shift individual teeth into the right place. Once they make the journey, it’s much easier for patients to care for their oral health. Thankfully, there are several types of braces available to accommodate nearly any request.
Braces: Types and Goals
It has been said that good orthodontic treatment can and does change a person’s face, future, and fortune. Properly arranged teeth permit comfort, normal function, ease of cleaning, oral and general health/wellbeing, and of course a beautiful smile.
Braces are one of the most common orthodontic appliances. In most cases, braces are individualized to exert gentle pressure on the teeth and/or jaw bones. They can be used to correct a wide variety of dental/skeletal misalignments.
Brackets
Braces typically consist of three main elements: metal brackets bonded to the surface of the teeth, holding a wire secured in place by elastic ties. This helps your orthodontic exert light force on the teeth in any three planes of space, gently moving teeth where they need to go. These are all attached in several steps designed to minimize discomfort.
Brackets are most frequently made of metal, but some patients prefer the look of ones made of clear ceramic materials. Elastic bands also come in many colors.
Clear Aligners
Clear plastic aligners are requested by patients who want treatment with minimal effects on their appearance.
Clear aligners like Invisalign are a removable set of clear plastic trays that are placed over your teeth. Each tray is part of a series designed to move your teeth a small amount at a time. These must be worn at least 22 hours a day to be effective.
While popular, like all treatment options clear aligners do have limitations. We advise our patients if this method can produce a good outcome once diagnostic records are taken and evaluated.
